Ride-Ready: Introduction to Indoor Riding and your first 20k Ride
This 12-week beginner cycling plan is designed to help you move from casual leisure riding to completing a confident, controlled 20 km ride. The goal is not just to ride longer, but to learn how to ride with purpose using structured indoor cycling workouts.
Throughout the plan, you will build gradually through endurance rides, tempo rides, sweet spot efforts, and introductory over-under workouts. Every fourth week is a recovery week to help your body absorb the training and keep you progressing without overdoing it.
This plan is ideal for athletes who already know how to ride a bike but are new to structured cycling, indoor training, or using apps such as TrainingPeaks Virtual, Zwift, or Rouvy.
To complete the plan, you will need:
An indoor trainer equipped with power, or a speed sensor for virtual power
An app such as TrainingPeaks Virtual, Zwift, or Rouvy
A bike that is safe, comfortable, and ready to ride
A fan, water bottle, and towel — trust us on the fan
If you do not have a power meter, speed sensor, or indoor training app, do not worry. You can still complete these workouts using RPE, or Rate of Perceived Exertion, and a simple timer. The most important thing is learning how different efforts feel, building consistency, and riding with purpose.
By the end of the plan, you should have a better understanding of pacing, cadence, effort control, and how different cycling workouts feel. You will also be ready to complete a 20 km ride with more confidence, comfort, and control.
