Road-Ready: 10 Week - 5K Personal Best (PB) Builder
You can already run 5K. Now you want to run it faster.
This 10-week plan is designed for runners who have already completed a 5K race, time trial, or structured 5K speed plan and are ready to chase a stronger personal best. You do not need to be an elite runner, but you should be comfortable running 4 times per week and have some experience with intervals, tempo runs, hills, or strides.
The plan includes 4 runs per week, with a mix of easy running, strides, threshold work, VO2-style intervals, hill power, 5K race rhythm, long easy runs, and a final 5K race or time trial. Workouts are written using RPE so you can train by effort, but they can also be completed using pace, heart rate, or sport watch zones.
This plan is ideal for runners who have completed the Run-Ready: 5K Speed Builder, recreational runners chasing a 5K personal best, Parkrun athletes, sprint triathletes, and runners who want a more focused plan without jumping into high-mileage advanced training.
By the end of the plan, you should have better race pacing, improved speed endurance, stronger threshold fitness, more confidence at 5K effort, and a clearer understanding of how to train for performance with control.
To complete this plan, you should be able to:
- Run 5K continuously without walking
- Run 4 times per week consistently
- Complete a long easy run of 45-60 minutes
- Handle basic interval, hill, stride, or tempo sessions
- Use RPE, pace, heart rate, or sport watch zones to guide effort
You will need:
- Comfortable running shoes
- A GPS watch or running app is helpful, but not required
- A safe route, track, treadmill, or measured path for interval sessions
- Optional basic strength equipment, though bodyweight is enough
This is not a beginner 5K plan. This is the next step for runners who are ready to train with more purpose, build stronger race-specific fitness, and chase a faster 5K.
